The Shimano Dura Ace HB-7710 track racing hubs are still made with traditional, adjustable loose ball bearings of exceptional quality, rather than cartridge bearings more commonly found today. The reasoning behind this is that a skilled mechanic can adjust and set the bearings to run with appreciably less friction than even the best cartridge bearings. These little things count when it's all down to a fraction of a second! Of course this means that they require maintenance and correct adjustment, but the performance rewards are great and the bearings are protected by labyrinth seals which keep muck out. These can be omitted if ultimate friction free track performance is required however.
